Slowsidedown "Impractical Strategies" 7"
EXC-017
4 songs from this little known but incredible Portland, OR band. This is the singer from Jayhawker along with heavily Drive Like Jehu and Gravity Records influenced Hardcore music. This is their 2nd 4 song 7" - Their first came out on their own label, Red Alert Works. Also look for a Slowsidedown song on the "Brewing" Comp. 7".
"Much of 90's post hardcore has an interesting ability to mix different intensities, at one moment playing quiet almost spoken music then breaking into crashing chaotic thrashing hardcore. It's strength can also be it's greatest weakness. At it's best it can fucking shake people up, providing for a powerful new attack that resists the ease and safety of pre-approved sounds. At it's worst it just bores people in trying to impress them with junked up fancy song structure. This Portland band offers the former. This gravely raw punk manages to have just the right mix of layered experimental guitar stuff and all out moments of jagged rythmns and strained chaos. The production rides the edge of distortion and helps to pour across the franticness othese songs. All this is complimented by thoughtful and heartfelt lyrics with song explanations." (MK) MRR
